This retail mall is being developed on a plot adjacent to a heritage monument – Aga Khan’s Palace. The Clients did not want to take away from the architecture of the local region and surrounding heritage monument at the same wishing to develop a modern building with a contemporary façade. Keeping this in mind the architects have envisioned for the front elevation of Retail Mall a unique façade which gives the impression of a moving façade design. This has also been planned taking into consideration that the retail mall will be situated on the busy highway and most people will see the front elevation of the mall from their moving vehicles. The façade elements include stone cladding, structural glazing, atrium skylight, ACP cladding, shop front glazing, curved entrance façade and glass railings.

The Mall has a unique atrium skylight with a combination of metal roof and laminated glass. The 47 story structure is a monolithic glass tower with variable curved surface planes and straight recesses. The project site is located in Gurgaon, India and is located 15km away from Delhi International Airport. The initial concept is to develop four buildings including 3 office towers and a retail block. An iconic office tower complex with high visibility is envisioned. The Office tower shall be 12 stories high, including ground floor, with maximum height of 60m. During our initial design brief meeting with the architects, four primary façade types were identified as a part of the typical towers. The façade elements include Unitized glass curtain wall featuring full height, floor to ceiling glass, minimal vertical sight lines and large horizontal sunshades cantilevered off the face of the primary curtain wall in one wall type. At the termination points of this wall type HOK envisions buttress walls. Wall Type Two (located at segmented curved elevation without sunshades, flat walls including major elevations, end elevations and insets) is comprised of unitized glass curtain wall featuring full height, floor to ceiling glass, minimal vertical sight lines and an expressed horizontal channel feature reveal setting back for the face of the glass 100-150mm. Other façade elements include vertical cantilevered glass fins and point fitting/ hybrid transparent system.

The façade acts as the load bearing structure replacing conventional columns and beams. Steel plate and concrete composite is contoured in conical and curvilinear shapes creating a sculptural mass of white pearlescent surfaces. The shapes create functional spaces of unique geometry with large monolithic glass surfaces that are subordinate to the opaque surfaces creating light portals. Each building comprises of 2 level retail + 3 level parking and 10 floors of office space. The different façade elements comprise of Composite glazing, aluminum cladding, glass enclosure, suspended glazing, entrance canopy, stone cladding and entrance glazing. The composite glazing incorporates 1.5 m deep vertical fins throughout the height of the building at every three modules. The horizontal louvers at the spandrel areas are hooked on between the two vertical fins. The glass box enclosing the lifts comprises of a mix of opaque and clear glass and incorporates LED lighting.

The facade incorporates a flying buttress wall of glass that creates a relief from the visual mass of the building. The building comprises of 2 independent blocks connected by the sky terraces located at every two floors which create a visual appeal of openness and light. The steel sub structure supporting the glass which is cantilevered 9 m above the terrace floor slab; is designed by us and also incorporates the provision for the building maintenance unit. This cantilevered glass serves the dual purpose of enhancing the visual appeal and to distract from the chiller plants which are located on the terrace floor.

This New York landmark complex is undergoing a transformation to meet the future needs of artists and patrons. The new design incorporates dramatic architectural features including a highly transparent lobby for the expanded Alice Tully Hall. The system selected by the architectural team is comprised of a cable net system utilizing tensioned steel cables that support the glazing nodes with very little exposed metal elements on the exterior surface. The plaza features a high span, all glass enclosed restaurant. The high span glass system includes cantilevered laminated low iron glass fins and unencumbered sightlines. The new expanded Julliard School facade will embrace some of the same material including travertine stone cladding and incorporate modern massing and scale to the elevation. The new additions to the facade meld well with the venerable existing design while providing a fresh new zeal to this cultural complex.

The project is comprised of a new cantilevered structure that juts out over the lush landscape and is linked to the existing former British armory building via a contemporary bridge spanning an active creek bed. The existing buildings are historic in mass and shape but have been integrated with the new architecture by incorporating "jewel box” facade elements bringing natural light to the interiors. The primary facade features 7’ 4”x18’6” single glass lites supported by bronze clad fins measuring 11” deep and 1” wide tapered down to ¼” resulting in a stunning openness to the perimeter of the building. Warm hues of bronze cladding wrap the remainder of the facade which will meld with the natural surroundings.

Description

Known as the "Forgotten City", Champaner is nearly 6 km by 6 km and on and around Pavagadh Hill which is visited by tens of thousands of religious pilgrims each year. Numerous structures constructed early in the millennium include temples, minarets, homes, and various community based buildings dot the lush landscaped valley and hill. The structures are principally comprised of "Champak" colored rocks that were quarried locally. In addition many structures feature carved Jalis from the basalt or sandstone. Champaner is now designated a World Heritage Site and thus protected from future development.

This South Mumbai landmark was completed in 1903 and remains today the preeminent hotel in all India as well as the corporate icon for Taj Hotels Worldwide. The structure is exposed to dramatic climate changes and has weathered well considering the dynamics of annual monsoons, settling of earth, and the poor maintenance regimen over the past 100 years. The client endeavors to return the building to its original design, which requires removal of added elements and restoration of all facade components. Extensive survey work and testing was required to ensure that remediation of the facade was in concert with restoration of the supporting structure and operating systems within the building. Ultimately, the facade will be returned to its original glory as envisioned by the design architect in the late 1800’s.

The balance of the building of the building includes archives, administrative office, and a large public area, café and museum store. The Museum’s unique facade incorporates cast Tombasil bronze panels, non-directional stainless cladding, and flush seamed sheet metal cladding. The facade was designed to ensure the sightlines were clearly defined. The glass curtain wall is delicately folded within the facade to create natural light in the Museum.

The unique structure is located immediately adjacent to Boston’s Back Bay. The building features a unique cantilevered gallery space, which also acts as an overhang for ramped seating for outdoor exhibitions and program. The facade is comprised of channel glass, which when illuminated acts as a large lantern spanning over 14,000 square feet. In addition, the North Gallery wall is a hybrid insulated suspended glass wall with a unique fitting pattern and utilizes lenticular film to create visual interest when viewing from the interior of the Gallery. Other facade elements include stainless steel entrances, aluminum cladding, high span glass curtain wall, Tauari hardwood soffits, and exterior features.

Description

This is a 33 story premium residential block comprising of two towers. Considering its unique location facing the sea and wind orientation; we custom designed 3 meter span sliding windows for a high wind pressure of 2.5 Kpa. Use of laminated glass was recommended for safety. Glass blocks formed a part of the external facade. Kalpataru Horizon has won the CNBC Awaaz Crycil Real Estate Award in 2007 for the Best Residential Building. The entries for the award were at the national level.

Description

The new home of the Cowboys will feature large inverted sloped wall which reduces solar heat gain and accommodates variable spans for mixed use applications of private and public spaces. The ends of the stadium feature large operable doors clad with a glass curtain wall system. The top of the structure incorporates an operable roof for natural day lighting and ventilation. To bring scale to the project natural cleft stone will be utilized at the main entrances along with jewel box glass features for displays and public space. Large multi-media elements have been melded into the facade design to take advantage of the marketing opportunities and announce future events.

The combination of metal suspended in resin can create a CorTen look alike without the shortcomings; interior surfaces can have a metallic appearance without the weight and mechanical limitations. We have applied a composite copper facade on the Stephen Gaynor School in New York and composite aluminum facade components to the Dallas Cowboy Stadium in Texas. Description

Skirkanich Hall is sited between two buildings and acts as the gateway for the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences as well as serving the needs of the Department of Bioengineering. The facade features a glazed green brick created for the project, cantilevered and layered glass curtain wall, zinc metal cladding, and black granite at the ground level. The entire facade is based on a rain screen design which allows for a cleaner more maintenance free building enclosure and crisper architectural sightlines.

Description

The urban center of Honolulu consists of approximately one million square feet of gross area located within the urban center of Hawaii. The facility includes convention space, meeting rooms, and a concealed parking structure.

The massive lobby features one of the world’s largest suspended glass walls spanning over 540 linear feet across the facade of the building and is suspended up to 90 feet above grade from structural steel trees. The suspended glass wall features custom designed stainless steel casting and virtually invisible ¼” stainless steel stabilizing rods. The wall design incorporated a sustainable design with natural ventilation.

Description

This 5-story structure consists of large floor plates for fluid changes in regard to allocation of floor space. The project is the second phase of a large Boeing campus. The project was development on a “fast-track” basis with duration of 24 months from start from architectural design to move-in by the client.

The facade was designed concurrently with the building and features large curtain wall units with integrated metal cladding, insulated high performance glass and interior trim elements to accommodate electrical distribution. Unique skylighting and high span lobby elements are functional and aesthetic accents to the building.

The architectural team created the original new museum and was retained for the large expansion with similar architectural themes. One of the most stunning design components is the lobby with a large cantilevered roof and highly transparent high span glass wall. The glass is unsupported along the vertical joints which required a heavy glass make-up of three plies of ½” low iron glass 6 ft wide and 15’6” tall. The corner detail included staggering the plies to avoid an unsightly joint and conceal the glass interlayer.

Situated among designated Landmark structures, this modern townhouse facade includes 1 ¼” steel plate, nominally fourteen feet wide and thirty-four feet tall and acts as the centerpiece of the front facade. Tucked behind the steel plate are high span steel windows with knife blade mullions and operable vents. The rear elevation incorporates large stainless steel bi-fold doors and high span steel window walls. Natural light is channeled into the building through a formed copper skylight assembly. Although the design of the facade is very modern, selection of materials blends with the surrounding historic neighborhood.

Description

The Historic City of Angkor, a vast (more than 310 square kilometers) Hindu-Buddhist temple complex in north-central Cambodia, is among the most magnificent architectural wonders of Southeast Asia. Founded more than a millennium ago, the ancient city was the one-time seat of the mighty Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the region between the ninth and fifteenth centuries A.D. Later the empire declined and the capital was abandoned. The project we worked on was 12.5% of an appropriate one kilometer of galleries containing the famous bas reliefs of Angkor Wat. In the aerial view the galleries enclose the main temple complex and a raised grass covered courtyard. One Gallery is approximately 50 meters long and overall 6 meters wide on the courtyard side and it is 12 meters to the apex of the vault with 18 meters on the outside. The client required us to design scaffolding that would be load bearing. We worked out the design concept utilizing standard modular scaffolding and standard structural shapes available in Asia.

Located in a prime retail district of Central Hong Kong, the architectural team developed a stunning facade on the podium of the tower to create visual interest and support the Gucci store. The face features nine different glass configurations, including custom rolled glass with iconic patterns and the Gucci logo. The entire facade incorporates fiber-optic lighting, which is integrated with the profiles of the glass glazing systems, illuminating three layers of glass and metal cladding. Suspended structural fins provide support for the primary weathering facade and provide transparency for the backlit glass lights.

This full block structure is locate in the heart of Pune and serves as Southeast Asia’s largest convention center. Street level canopies add smaller scale elements add a larger scale rhythm to the lower facade volume. A central volume is completely glazed to provide an iconic element to the overall structure. The building is unique in its use of a fully ventilated system.

The design of the building requires conformance with the UC Berkeley master plan, but the building developed its own identity by utilizing unique materials that correlate the use of the building. facade elements include large bronze cast Asian grilles, which provide shading and an iconic feature to the building. The stone cladding utilizes an open joint hanging system resulting in clean sightlines and integration of adjacent materials including flat seam copper panels, bronze clad window wall, and lead coated copper accent panels at the parapet are. Although there is significant mass to the building, the facade materials, sightlines, and Asian pattern in the bronze grilles, diminishes the visual mass.

An international bank with substantial operations in India embraced the concept of intense design charettes for a new corporate campus. The team was lead by the design architect and supported by consultants from critical disciplines including sustainable design, mechanical/electrical, logistics, landscape, site evaluation and facade design. The four day charette with the client’s direct input in advance of typical schematic design generated significant work product and streamlined the programming and concept phases of the project.
Axis Facades generated twelve rendered concepts including animation of operable elements culminating in three final designs that have been incorporated into the design of the project. The facade design includes operable cast aluminum “Jalis” which provide shading, natural striated cleft stone and living greenery on select elevations. The facade contributed significantly to the sustainable equation facilitating natural day lighting, variable shading and controlled ventilation.
