Description
The Historic City of Angkor, a vast (more than 310 square kilometers) Hindu-Buddhist temple complex in north-central Cambodia, is among the most magnificent architectural wonders of Southeast Asia. Founded more than a millennium ago, the ancient city was the one-time seat of the mighty Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the region between the ninth and fifteenth centuries A.D. Later the empire declined and the capital was abandoned. The project we worked on was 12.5% of an appropriate one kilometer of galleries containing the famous bas reliefs of Angkor Wat. In the aerial view the galleries enclose the main temple complex and a raised grass covered courtyard. One Gallery is approximately 50 meters long and overall 6 meters wide on the courtyard side and it is 12 meters to the apex of the vault with 18 meters on the outside. The client required us to design scaffolding that would be load bearing. We worked out the design concept utilizing standard modular scaffolding and standard structural shapes available in Asia.
